Fishers of Men
(Mark 1:14-18 NIV)
“ After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. "The time has come," he said.
"The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!" As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw
Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I
will make you fishers of men." At once they left their nets and followed him.”
1. Why are we here as a church?
2. Do we want to grow as a church or do we want to just have a little group of friends to meet with?
Jesus proclaimed the good news of God.
He said, “The time has come...” The Jews had been waiting for many years for the coming of Messiah – the Promised
He said Repent and Believe –
a. Repent – means to turn around – to change direction. Last week I told you that I once lived for music. It was the
center of my life. Then, I repented – I changed direction and Jesus became the center of my life.
b. To repent means to change your reason for living. Why should we dedicate our lives to things on earth that will pass
away? We should dedicate our lives the things that are eternal.
a. John 6:27 "Don’t waste your energy striving for perishable food like that. Work for the food that sticks with you, food
that nourishes your lasting life, food the Son of Man provides. He and what he does are guaranteed by God the Father to
c. Jesus said “repent” because He was introducing a change from the way things had been done. The religious
leaders were offering ‘religion’. The were leading people in a form of worship and a form of following the law, but there was
no passion in it. They did it because it was expected – not because they loved God. Jesus taught that true religion comes
from the heart.
d. Believe the good news of God – the good news is that the Savior has come.
3. Do we believe that good news?
a. If we do, we should respond in the right way.
i. If we believe that Jesus is the Savoir and Lord of the world, then we should follow Him.
ii. If we believe it, then we should share it.
Jesus said, “I will make you fishers of men...”
4. What is the purpose of fishing?
These men were professionals. Fishing was not a casual activity for them; it was work. They didn’t fish just to pass time
with friends. They fished to make a living. But Jesus said, “I am going to change the object of your fishing. You will no
longer fish for fish, but you will fish for men.”
What he meant was that we will bring men and women into the kingdom of God. And we will do it the way fishermen catch
a. find out where the fish are
b. find out what they are biting – use the right bait
c. bring them into the boat
d. take them home
5. Do you want others to come to church?
Next week, I want you to bring someone to church with you.
