The Purpose Of The Holy Spirit
Acts 1:8  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all
Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

1. He comes to give us power to become witnesses.
He gives us the ability to live the Christian life.  You cannot do it by your own ability.  No one can satisfy the requirements of
God’s laws except through the power of the Holy Spirit.  As we obey His leading in our lives, we fulfill the law by the spirit of
the law.

2. Seven functions of the Holy Spirit outlined in God’s Word:

Conviction
John 16:8-9  And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: [9] Of sin, because
they believe not on me;
John 6:44  "No-one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.
Matthew 16:16-17  Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon
son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.
It is the Spirit of God who reveals truth to you.

Conversion

John 3:5  Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into
the kingdom of God.
Born of water refers to physical birth; born of the spirit refers to spiritual birth.  Jesus is saying here that it is not enough just
to be born – just to be alive – you must be born again, be born spiritually.  The Spirit of God must come to live in you.)
John 3:6  Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.
John 6:63  It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they
are life.

Confirmation

Romans 8:16  The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
The Holy Spirit confirms in our hearts that we belong to God.

Conformation

2 Corinthians 3:18  But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image
from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
Galatians 5:22-23  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, [23] Meekness,
temperance: against such there is no law.
The Spirit of God changes us – transforms us – conforms us.

Romans 8:29  For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the
firstborn among many brethren.

Counsel

John 16:13  Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth . . .
The Holy Spirit is our guide.  He helps us to understand God’s Word.  He comforts us in times of trouble.  (Jesus called him the
Comforter in John 16:7)

Control

Romans 8:14  For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
75yHe will show us the way to go, the things to do, the words to say.  Jesus said He would give us the words.

Matthew 10:19-20  But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that
same hour what ye shall speak. [20] For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

We see evidence in the book of Acts of the Holy Spirit telling Paul where to go next.
Acts 16:6-9  Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to
preach the word in Asia, [7] After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.
[8] And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. [9] And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of
Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

Condition

Acts 1:8  “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you . . .”  The Spirit enables us to be witnesses, to
minister, to meet the need at hand.
Zechariah  4:6 ‘. . . Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.”  He equips us by giving us gifts and
anointing those gifts and abilities for the purpose of ministry.

Romans 12:6-8  Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, … ministry, … teaching…
exhortation… giveth, … ruleth, … sheweth mercy …

1 Corinthians 12:4  Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:28  And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that
miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

1 Corinthians 12:7-11   But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. [8] For to one is given by the
Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; [9] To another faith by the same Spirit; to
another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; [10] To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another
discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: [11] But all these worketh
that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
